Theracanzan injection

injectable solution

Composition: Each 1 ml contains:

Sulphadiazine sodium … 218.45 mg(Equivalent to 200 mg sulphadiazine)
Trimethoprim ….. 40 mg.

Properties:
Theracanzan is a sterile solution formulated as injectable preparation composed of
trimethoprim and sulphadiazine. The action of this combination proved to be bactericidal,
whereas the components separately were only bacteriostatic in action.
Sulfadiazine (SDZ) acts as anti-metabolite by inhibiting the incorporation of para-
aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into folic acid.

Trimethoprim (TMP) inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) which converts
dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid (THFA).
SDZ/TMP combination is bactericidal, inhibiting sequential steps in the synthesis of
purines which are required for DNA synthesis. This double blockade mode of action leads to
broad bactericidal action.
Theracanzan has a strong bactericidal action against a wide range of Gram-positive and
Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, a large proportion of anaerobic bacteria, Chlamydia and
protozoa.

  • Theracanzan is indicated in the treatment of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Streptococci, Staphylococci, Actinobacilli, E. coli, Bordetella spp., Corynebacteria, Haemophilus spp., Salmonella spp., Pasteurella spp., Klebsiella spp., Pneumococci and Proteus.
